Chapter 14
The mind question
Go back to the landing-stage. A man's hand is moving toward his waistcoat-pocket, and a boatman is waiting, and between them stands a question that one of them has already answered wrongly. On page one of this book, that scene was a curiosity: a bare wia. refusing to mean a price, a stranger's grammar filing a small objection its owner ignored. Read it again now and every part of it reports to you. You know why the sentence orders itself the way it does, relations announced before the thought arrives. You know that to ho is a voluntary admission, one syllable of honesty about assumption that no rule extracted from the narrator. You know what the missing money words refused and what the refusal bought, and why Dick, bless him, reaches for the tide.
The scene did not change. You did. Thirteen chapters of a book rewired nothing and rehearsed a great deal, and that difference, made in a reader by ordinary prose, is this chapter's whole subject in miniature. The book's science chapters settled what a language cannot be shown to do to a mind. This last full chapter states what Phi's design offers a mind, on the design's own terms, and then does the one thing the invented century never managed: it says exactly how someone could find out the rest.
What the design offers
Four offers, each one taught earlier and gathered here.
The modifier-first rule offers a rehearsal. Every sentence states its relations before delivering its content, chapter 3's small ceremony of preparation, performed again each time speech begins. The evidentials offer a habit of noticing how one knows: four voluntary markers and a resting state that claims nothing, so that disclosure, when it comes, is an act of the speaker and not a tax of the grammar. The exchange refusal offers a daily reframe of what changes hands: with no word for pay, the day's transactions pass through the verbs chapter 2 laid out, giving, receiving, sharing, exchanging, and each use is a small vote on what the exchange actually was. And the sky's day offers attention to where the light is. A household that says
lo mia sui norawhi sholei. PL 1SG DUR dusk gather. (We gather at dusk.)
has agreed to consult the sky rather than a dial, and the appointment will move with the season, which is the point.
None of this is compelled. All of it is occasioned: the grammar builds the occasion into the sentence, and the speaker decides, sentence by sentence, what to do with it. That is the honest shape of every practice claim this book has made, and it is also, not coincidentally, the shape of the protocol Phi wrote for itself before any of these chapters existed.
The findings this book does not borrow
There is a literature that seems, at first glance, to promise more, and the temptation to borrow it lands exactly here, so here is where the book declines it once.
In British Columbia, Hallett, Chandler, and Lalonde examined youth suicide across 152 First Nations bands and found that in communities where at least half the members reported conversational knowledge of their own language, rates "effectively dropped to zero," while bands below that line suffered "more than six times the number of suicides," 96.59 against 13.00 per hundred thousand (Hallett, Chandler and Lalonde 2007). A 2022 realist review gathered 130 publications on Indigenous language use and health and concluded that "language use and revitalization emerge as protective factors in the health of Indigenous populations" (Whalen et al. 2022). These are among the most moving findings anywhere in the study of language and life, and they are not transferable, and the sources themselves say why. Hallett and colleagues call language "a marker of cultural persistence," a part standing for the whole of a people's continuity under colonization, and their study is a preliminary, community-level correlation by their own description. The review's plausible mechanisms are connection, belonging, and a return to traditional lifeways; the goals it names for revitalization run through sovereignty and cultural reclamation; and its authors state the deepest claim plainly: "Indigenous language is the vessel that most efficiently carries these cultural lifeways." A constructed language has no ancestors and nothing to reclaim. What these findings document belongs to peoples recovering their own tongues, and this book's borrowing rights there are zero. Phi salutes that work from across a real distance and claims none of it.
The experiment nobody ran
What Phi can claim is a stranger inheritance: the invented century's unfinished business. Chapter 11 told it as an audit: Loglan proposed the experiment and never assembled it, Láadan set a deadline and never got the speakers, Toki Pona got the speakers and has not turned testimony into evidence. Every values-built language of the century wrote a promissory note about minds, and every note came due unpaid, always for the same reason: the community and the question never existed at the same time.
If the community this part of the book imagines ever forms, Phi will hold both at once, and the questions are ready to be stated now, in advance, small enough to fail. Here are three.
Does journaling in Phi shift source-marking in a writer's English? The journal form asks its two sentences nightly, one witnessed, one felt, and Turkish's obligatory evidentials tuned source memory in linguistically framed tasks (Tosun, Vaid and Geraci 2013). The question for Phi is whether a chosen evidential does anything an obligatory one does: collect a journal-keeper's English from before and after a season of practice and count the attributions, the hedges, the I-saw-it-myselfs. Failure is perfectly imaginable, and it would look like English prose that never moves.
Does the composition ethic transfer? Phi's bounded lexicon makes walking around a missing word a daily practice, and the one classroom pilot on a small language and circumlocution ended at six students and a hedged maybe (Coluzzi 2022). A community of Phi journal-keepers is the study Coluzzi could not run: measure paraphrase fluency in the learner's other languages, before and after, against learners of a large-lexicon language. Failure looks like no difference, and finding it would itself be worth knowing.
Do announce-first speakers write differently in public? Chapter 1 measured the feeds: out-group pointing and moral-emotional heat predict what travels. The instruments exist and are public. Take the online writing of people who practice a grammar that states relations before content and refuses the vocabulary of contempt, and compare it, at scale and blind, with matched controls. The design cannot prove causation, and selection effects will apply to everyone who volunteers for a language like this, but drift is measurable, and no drift is a finding with teeth (Rathje, Van Bavel and van der Linden 2021).
Small questions, stated in advance, answerable either way. One maintainer cannot run them, because a study of speakers needs speakers; the community that could answer them is the same community chapters 12 and 13 imagined arriving word by word. The questions will keep. They are written down now so that failure stays imaginable, which is the one epistemic courtesy the century's grander projects never paid themselves.
The tide, again
Morris left his narrator at the landing-stage with his hand in his pocket, certain of a custom that no longer existed, and his Phi grammar quietly marking the certainty as assumption. That narrator is this book's favorite person, because his position is the honest one: standing in a new country, guessing by the old rules, with a syllable's worth of self-knowledge riding along. The language he was speaking was built to keep that syllable available. Not to force it, and never to pretend it makes him wise, but to hold the door of the sentence open long enough for honesty to step in.
Whether a life of such sentences changes the speaker is the mind question, and the book has kept faith with the evidence by leaving it a question, now with three proposed answers-in-waiting attached. What is not in question is the offer, which stands in the protocol Phi wrote for itself and has kept every day since. It is one sentence long, and it is the right second-to-last word for a book like this one: "The language offers the practice; speakers do the work."
