The short road

One organizing principle

A child seeing a bird can show the direction. One well-behaved bird is not much of a grammar test, so here is a sentence with a chisel.

Read it in order: I, with a chisel, the wood, cut. The preposition announces the instrument before the chisel arrives, and the object stands before the act. By the time the verb lands, its surroundings are already on the table.

Phi calls this announce, then deliver. A modifier precedes its head, a possessor precedes what is possessed, and a condition precedes its consequence. The principle does not abolish the rest of the grammar, but it gives that grammar a dependable direction.

Thirty-five particles keep their places

Phi content words keep one shape: there is no conjugation, declension, plural ending, or grammatical case ending. Thirty-five one-syllable particles carry much of the grammar in three fixed positions. Prepositions, complementizers, pronouns, and classifiers work beside them. A content word learned once does not change. Watch a sentence grow:

The Slot 1 particles immediately before the verb follow one order: tense > aspect > voice > evidentiality > modality > negation. Each rank admits at most one particle, with one ruled exception inside voice: passive se may pair with causative ka.

By the time the primer introduces habitual ro, the cat has already made a persuasive case for it. This is among her more strenuous household duties.

The question stands where the answer will

A yes-or-no question begins with wa, so the listener knows the sentence is a question before its claim arrives:

A content question puts its asking word exactly where the answer would stand. Nothing else moves.

The ordinary question about age shows what this answer-shaped grammar can do:

The literal form asks, "How many years do you hold?" Age appears as something carried through life, not an identity assigned to the person.

Count in threes

Phi's numerals are ternary. The three digits are mu ta wi: zero, one, two. shao names a three-group and phoi a nine-group; lau and rei name groups of twenty-seven and eighty-one. Exact numbers compose from the largest group down through 242. A larger exact value stays in source notation outside the Phi passage.

Two nines and a three make twenty-one. The grouping is audible, but familiarity still takes practice; most learners will not greet base three as a long-lost relation. The foundation runs from zero through eight, the working range through twenty-six, and the extended exact range through 242. Conversational competence does not require quick conversion from decimal or memorization of every possible form.

The day follows the sky

Phi has no word for hour, minute, or o'clock. Ordinary time follows eight stations of the sun. From first light to afternoon they are horathe (dawn), kelua (morning), thaeso (midday), and lorui (afternoon). Then come howai (evening), norawhi (dusk), shero (night), and phoemu (midnight). A friend may arrive during the morning rather than at 9:40.

When clock time matters, a medicine schedule, transport record, or scientific observation retains the exact figure in its surrounding medium. Phi has chosen not to turn that notation into ordinary vocabulary.

The same boundary applies to measurement. Phi has no unit words such as meter or mile. Everyday extent can rest on comparison or lived reference:

Technical dimensions retain their source notation. The missing unit word is no reason to mislay the number.

The question with nothing to count

Phi has no words for money, price, or wage, nor verbs meaning pay, buy, or sell. What changes hands can be said through the acts themselves: loa (give), howela (receive), phowe (share), and wisola (exchange). A financial source can retain its own terms and figures when speakers need to report, study, or criticise them.

The text shelf puts this refusal to work. In the second chapter of the current Phi News from Nowhere, William Morris's time traveler tries to tip his boatman:

Morris wrote "How much?" Phi's wia. means "how many", but the sentence supplies nothing to count. The boatman guesses that the stranger means the tide. The current rendering changes Morris's context-laden question, and its chapter records that departure: Morris supplies the moneyless society, Phi's lexical refusal reshapes the question, and the misunderstanding survives.

Meanings can stay in view

Phi has seven coined color adjectives. Other hues show their source in registered compounds: kerou welisha, stone color, is gray; horathe welisha, dawn color, is pink.

The same method reaches beyond color. East is sileta thorui, the sun's beginning, and west is sileta lumae, its end. korua thero, heart-fire, names anger; thiku nila, seeing-small, names contempt. These are canonical expressions made from lexicon words, not extra dictionary entries hiding under the floorboards.

Two conversion rules widen the vocabulary without changing a word's shape. A verb can name its event: remo means think and also a thought, while thalo means walk and a walk. An adjective can name its quality, so siloma means simple and simplicity. Position and surrounding grammar tell the readings apart.

A name announces itself

ne is a capital letter that can be heard: it announces a proper designation. A speaker may carry an existing content word as a name, as in ne sulae, a person called Warm, or choose a new Phi-shaped onym of two, three, or four syllables. A new onym may not duplicate a syllable with an onset, and a current function word cannot also be a name.

A content-word name retains its lexical association. A new onym can identify a person, place, work, or other referent without acquiring a shared dictionary gloss. In either case, Phi says aloud that the next form is a name.

Three relationships to a text

A translation remains answerable to the source's claims and distinctions while using Phi grammar. It may need a description, a compound, or a new word, but Phi's five pillars do not grant permission to improve another writer.

The North Wind and the Sun, Article 1, Babel, the Heart Sutra, the Metta Sutta, and A Solarpunk Manifesto are translations. The Ring Verse is something else: Tolkien's words remain visible, and Phi answers them with a refusal that makes no claim to be Tolkien's meaning. News from Nowhere keeps its current chapter-by-chapter source account in a separate book section while that rendering awaits review.

theama weno kawhera kelu (When Care Becomes Coercion) begins in Phi, and English reads it afterward. Two friends reach a practical boundary without solving the whole argument. The open window contributes less.

Where the choices come from

kia names Phi's five pillars. Along this road they have already done practical work. The sky stations and walking-distance measure draw on pre-industrial wisdom, while the moneyless Morris scene looks towards solarpunk.

Announce, then deliver owes part of its attention to Buddhist mindfulness and Right Speech, the practices of staying present to an utterance and considering what it will do. Grammar promises neither automatically. Art Nouveau appears in meanings grown through relation: gray from stone, pink from dawn. Peace linguistics asks whether an utterance sustains relationship or rehearses domination. That is why the Ring Verse receives a refusal.

These commitments make Phi culturally situated and value-explicit. Speakers remain responsible for what they do with it.
