Chapter 4 The philosophy of sound, meaning, and grammar
The three slots
In pi no mia naphe, "please help me," two small words arrive before the people and action. pi adds courtesy to the utterance, and no makes it a directive. Their position is predictable because Phi organises many function words into three slots.
The slots are a map of scope, not a moral checklist. They help a listener tell which part of the clause a particle affects. Part IV teaches every form and combination; this section explains the design.
Slot 0: the clause frame
Slot 0 comes at the beginning of the clause. wa marks a binary question, no a directive, su a wish, and lu a condition. pi adds politeness and comes first when it combines with another frame, as in pi wa or pi no.
These particles make clause force audible early. They do not reveal the speaker's whole intention. no covers both a request and a command, and courtesy does not erase a difference in power. The frame tells the listener what grammar is coming; the relationship tells them what the utterance asks of them.
Slot 1: the verb phrase
Slot 1 stands before the verb. Tense and aspect come first, followed by voice and evidentiality. Modality and negation close the block. Each rank normally admits one choice, with se ka, the passive of a causative, as the single voice pairing.
The source particles live here: hi for direct witness, ke for inference from particular evidence, ti for report, and ho for assumption from background expectation. All are optional. An unmarked assertion names no source, so the grammar does not ask "how do you know?" in every clause. A marked clause answers concisely when the question matters.
Slot 2: one word or phrase
Slot 2 stands before the content word it modifies. It handles distinctions of quantity, deixis, comparison, and focus within one constituent. Names and honorifics use this position too. So do addition, restriction, and intensity. When several appear in one phrase, their internal order follows a fixed wide-to-narrow cline.
The particles narrow or relate a particular constituent. ha melu is this friend, lo melu is friends without a stated count, and ru mioru is very beautiful. None makes reference exact beyond the distinction it actually carries. Context and repair remain part of understanding.
What lies outside the slots
The three slots do not carry all of Phi's grammar. Pronouns and content words have their own places. Prepositions relate phrases, conjunctions join them, and complementizer pairs frame embedded clauses. The slot model is useful precisely because it does one job: it keeps particles with different scopes from wandering into each other's chairs.
With practice, the positions become automatic, and attention comes free for the person and the meaning. That freed attention is what the slots were built to buy.
