When care becomes coercion

On a hot afternoon, sanuwe brings water to telari's home and finds an argument already waiting. telari feels dizzy, hears the proposal, and refuses to leave. A cooler community room is nearby.

This is an original Phi dialogue. Phi is the source text, and the English lines follow it as close readings. T shortens ne telari; S shortens ne sanuwe. They are friends. sanuwe arrives with water, not a title.

Proposition record

MoveProposition or distinctionState at the close
Bodily reporttelari reports dizziness and thirst. sanuwe directly observes sweat. Both speakers accept these as relevant evidence.
Initial claimsanuwe claims that telari is not safe in the hot home.telari understands the claim without agreeing to the proposed departure.
Inference challengeThe evidence supports care but leaves the response open.sanuwe retracts the stronger framing and separates required care from required departure.
Coercion boundaryPersuasion leaves refusal practically available. Coercion closes alternatives through power or threat. Both speakers use the distinction, but neither treats courteous wording as proof that a choice remains free.
AuthorityCare can offer reasons, as can protection, desire, or a tradeoff. Authority still needs its own ground.sanuwe accepts the distinction.
Present choicetelari is conscious, understands the reasons, and can answer. The present choice remains telari's.
Conditional consenttelari consents to being carried to the cooler room only if consciousness is absent, and reserves withdrawal while an answer remains possible.sanuwe repeats the boundary and commits to it.
Unresolved caseThe hard case is a person who cannot answer and has left no prior consent. The friends settle this afternoon; the general question survives it.

Vocabulary under pressure

QuestionPhi treatmentResult
Does interpersonal control need a root? The dialogue separates karami authority, kawhera coercion, lesawi consent, and naweri refusal. Technical ketora control never enters the scene. The dialogue needs no new root. The English umbrella word hides distinctions Phi can state directly.
How should present decision-making ability be described?Three ordinary observations carry the point: telari is waeli, understands the reasons with shelomu, and can lonae. Technical henora stays with systems. The composition keeps the observed abilities visible.
Can advance consent be expressed?A lu condition precedes a complete act framed by tha ... tho as the object of lesawi. The construction is long but clear. Repeated use can decide whether speakers need a shorter form.
Do persuasion and coercion remain distinct in use?sharemi leaves the route of refusal open; kawhera closes practical alternatives. The pair carries the argument in ordinary use.
Does danger itself decide what follows?pemaru, thesori, panoru, and natheri separate hazard, evidence, support, and entailment. The language can acknowledge danger without letting one observation choose the response.

Five-pillar reading

PillarWork done in the dialogue
Solarpunk valuesThe cooler community room is shared infrastructure that creates another option. Its open door widens the choice rather than settling it.
Secular Buddhist philosophyBoth speakers return to present experience, admit uncertainty, and loosen their hold on a complete conclusion. Attention stays with the person in the room rather than with winning the argument.
Art Nouveau aestheticsAir, skin, water, window, and bodily movement keep the reasoning in living form. Even the absent breeze participates, though with rather less civic spirit than the speakers might have preferred.
Peace linguisticsRefusal remains an answer. The speakers name coercion plainly, separate understanding from agreement, and repair an overreach instead of rewarding it with consensus.
Pre-industrial wisdomThe scene uses afternoon heat, moving air, water, and the community's nearby room rather than a clock or a numerical threshold. Exact records can still stand beside Phi when a real decision needs them.

The conditional agreement solves the afternoon's practical problem because telari can give it. The harder case is still waiting: a person cannot answer, no prior consent is available, and the desire to protect them has not settled who may act. The water, at least, has a clear destination.
