The Velveteen Rabbit

Margery Williams published The Velveteen Rabbit in 1922. A cloth rabbit is loved threadbare by a child, condemned to the bonfire after a fever, and carried at last by nursery magic into the life of a wild rabbit. This translation follows the complete story. Williams's capitalised Real becomes shewo, true. The recurring figures receive stable Phi onyms: most grow from their story roles, while Timothi keeps the sound of Timothy within a Phi word-shape. Exact source-bound terms remain in her lines beside the Phi. The result has room for the mouse, the ants, the sawdust heart, and one rather consequential tear.

Each block carries the Phi sentence, an exact structural gloss, English derived from that Phi alone, and Williams's original wording. The source line sets the terms. Where Phi must describe rather than name a clock unit, title, institution, or object, the translation limits at the end keep the remaining distance in view.

Translation limits

Every Williams fragment appears verbatim and in story order beside its Phi unit. The translation uses optional vocabulary in the nursery and sickroom, and again where governance or material work needs a sharper distinction. It does not make every source identity into a Phi root.
