The golden rule
Two vowels, two syllables
The final two letters of shea are neighbours on the page and separate syllables in the mouth: she.a. Finish the e, move directly to a, and let both remain audible. There is no required silence between them and no consonant hiding at the boundary.
This is vowel hiatus. Languages handle adjacent vowels in many ways, and some use both hiatus and diphthongs. Phi makes the rule categorical: adjacent vowels never merge into one syllable.

The boundary can be brief. At conversational tempo, the vowels may shorten and the movement between them may become quick, but a listener should still recover two vowel qualities and two syllables. Each syllable is a pearl on the word's thread, and the boundary is the small knot that keeps two pearls from wearing into one bead.
Why the boundary matters
Hiatus fixes the syllable count used for stress and word shape. lothea has three syllables, so stress falls on the; treating its final ea as one glide would move the stress and alter the canonical form. The rule also lets the romanization and Tengwar mode encode the same vowel sequence without guessing how a pair should be read.
The dot in lo.the.a is a teaching mark. It shows where the syllables meet but does not belong in ordinary Phi spelling.
Finding the movement
At first, lengthen the two vowels enough to hear both targets. In shea, hold e, then move the tongue and jaw to a without inserting a pause. Let the transition grow shorter as it becomes familiar.
The same method works through longer routes:
welao(we.la.o) moves from fronteto centrala, then to roundedo.nulae(nu.la.e) moves from roundeduthroughato fronte.lothea(lo.the.a) keeps its finale.aas two syllables under one smooth movement.
Record a few attempts if hearing the boundary from inside the word proves difficult. The recording is evidence about one attempt, not a verdict on the speaker's accent.
No third consecutive vowel
Phi permits a pair of adjacent vowels but never a sequence of three or more. The hypothetical maou would have three consecutive vowels and is therefore not a possible Phi form. A consonant onset must follow a vowel pair before another vowel can appear.
The constraint belongs to Phi word formation. Other languages and their speakers are free to pronounce longer vowel sequences; this sound system simply does not build words from them.
