Syllable structure
Divide lothea before each consonant onset and between its adjacent vowels: lo.the.a. The digraph th stays whole, each syllable ends in a vowel, and the final a stands without an onset because it follows another vowel. That pattern accounts for every Phi word.
Open syllables
An ordinary Phi syllable has one consonant onset followed by one vowel. The onset may be any of the ten single-letter consonants or one of the four digraphs. There are no other consonant clusters, and no syllable ends in a consonant.
A bare vowel syllable occurs only as the second half of hiatus. Words themselves always begin with a consonant onset, so a Phi word never begins with a vowel.

Counting syllables is unusually kind to the learner: count the vowels. phelona has e, o, and a, so it has three syllables. Canonical vocabulary forms have no more than three syllables. Productive Phi-form names have two, three, or four.
Whole-word constraints
A lexicon word cannot repeat a syllable. kala has two different syllables and is structurally possible; kaka repeats ka and cannot enter the vocabulary. Productive names use the related rule that no syllable with its own onset may repeat.
Phi also reserves every one-syllable form for grammar, and the word's first sound says which kind of grammar. A plain consonant and a vowel gives one of the thirty-eight particles or the base numerals mu, ta, and wi. A fricative digraph and a vowel gives one of the seven complementizers, the words that bracket an embedded clause. A content word or productive name therefore cannot be one syllable at all. These two shapes announce their broad grammatical role before a learner knows the word, and the ear separates them at the first sound: a particle begins on a closure, a bracket on a breath.
What other shapes can tell you
The remaining shape charter organizes the closed function-word families without reserving their forms from content vocabulary. shea is a two-syllable content word even though many two-syllable function words have a hiatus. shiro is another content word even though several frame words share its plain two-syllable pattern.

The table is a memory aid, not an automatic parser. Except for the reserved monosyllables, an unfamiliar shape does not disclose whether the word is content or function. Sentence position and learned vocabulary still have jobs to do.
Open syllables make every boundary predictable on the page; how readily listeners recover them in rapid speech is a question for listening evidence. On paper, at least, a Phi word's joints show through its spelling, which is more than most languages let a beginner say.
