Part 7
The dropped subject
The evening is late now, and the talk has gone easy. Listen to what the sentences do:
mia shelu theo. shelomu.
1SG book read. understand.
The second sentence has no subject, and none is missed. mia was established one period ago and remains recoverable, so the clause lets it go and keeps only the news. This is topic-drop: once a subject is established and stays recoverable, a later clause may omit it, and the sentences travel light.
01The two conditions
Established, then recoverable: both words earn their place. Established means the subject has actually been said, by noun, name, or pronoun, in the conversation this clause continues. Recoverable means a listener arriving at the bare verb lands on the right subject without hesitation. When both hold, the drop is free; the grammar asks nothing further. And the move is always optional: the full form stands ready whenever you want its explicitness, with shia on call the moment a third person needs saying aloud.
02Across a frame
The dependent clauses of chapter 19 hand their subject forward as smoothly as a period does:
shai shelira thiku nai mioru nai.
CONC forest small be beautiful be.
The frame establishes the forest; the main clause drops it and predicates beauty on the subject everyone already holds. One sentence, one subject, said once.
03After a description
A relative clause builds an unusually detailed subject, and the next sentence can spend the credit:
whu mia to nila peloru mioru nai. thuroa.
REL 1SG PST see flower beautiful be. grow.
The whole description ran once; the growing needed only a verb. The corpus does this constantly, and the complementizers pamphlet practices the same lightness around its quotative and interrogative frames, where a clear speaker or wonderer steps out of the main clause the same way.
04The restore move
The skill has two hands, and the second matters as much as the first. The moment a second referent enters, recoverability is the question to ask out loud:
melu to shua. lopia to shua. lopia to meliho.
friend PST come. child PST come. child PST sing.
Two arrivals stand established, so the singer is named, and the account stays exact. Restoring the noun, or reaching for shia, costs one word and buys certainty; the drop returns the moment the field clears back to one. Light when light is safe, explicit when two candidates compete: that is the whole art, and conversations practice it for you all day.
Practicelighten what can be lightened
- I read the book. I understand. Say it with the second subject dropped.
- Although the forest is small, it is beautiful. One subject, said once.
- The friend came. Rested. Is the drop safe? Say why.
- The friend came. The child came. Who sang? Make the account exact.
Answers: 1 mia shelu theo. shelomu. 2 shai shelira thiku nai mioru nai. 3 Safe: melu to shua. to therilu. One referent is established and no rival has entered, so the resting lands on the friend without hesitation. 4 lopia to meliho., the singer named in full, because two referents stand live and the listener deserves the word.
